Looks like the 2008 U.S. Senate election is finally underway, a whole fourteen weeks after the last statewide election. Forget the announcement speeches and fuzzy platitudes, let’s just get right to the attacks on family members. Shall we?
From today’s Rocky
“WASHINGTON – Two possible rivals in the U.S. Senate race in Colorado fired warning shots at each other Thursday, sounding themes that could echo from now until November 2008.
Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., agreed to co-sponsor a bill that seems to be pointed at a past controversy involving campaign payments to the wife of former GOP congressman Scott McInnis, a potential rival.“That prompted a McInnis spokeswoman to jab back, mentioning that Udall’s wife is a Capitol Hill lobbyist for environmentalists.”***
Political attacks, on spouses, 22 months before the election has now become a viable campaign “theme.” Does anyone else see the irony in campaigns that muddy themselves up when trying to attack each other’s ethics? We all know it’s going to happen eventually, but do we really need to go down that road this early?
***UPDATE: Colorado Media Matters posted an item pointing out that Maggie Fox is no longer a lobbyist with the Sierra Club. A fact that was caught by The Pueblo Chieftain (of all papers). Though, there are other problems with their article. As I point out in an earlier post.

Where will it all end? (2nd cousins?)
Udall did not attack McInnis or his wife. This is just the slant that the news is taking. What actually happened was that he agreed to co-sponsor a bill that would help control how campaign money is spent.
I agree, I think Colorado Media Matters did a good job of pointing this out in the item I link to in the update.
Overall, I think this exchange is much more damaging for McInnis than for Udall. The fact that McInnis lashed back so aggressively shows how sensitive he is about the ethics issue.
with attacks from enemies like that who needs friends?
